Neptune Fountain, Olomouc [CZ]

This is the oldest of the Baroque fountains in Olomouc, dating back to 1683. It was built on Dolní náměstí (Lower Square), on the site where St. Margaret's Chapel once stood. The statue of Neptune was created by Gdańsk sculptor Michael Mandík, while the stone basin and staircase were made by Olomouc stonemason Václav Schüler. The fountain was originally called the "Turtle Fountain" after the four turtles that "swam" in the water and were probably removed during restoration in 1754.

 

The fountain is part of a unique collection of Baroque fountains with antique motifs, which were intended to refer to ancient Rome and its deities, thus demonstrating the importance and prestige of the city. The statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the seas (Greek Poseidon), with his trident pointing downwards, symbolizes the calming of the waters and the protection of the city from floods. By protecting the city and its inhabitants, it points to the mythological power and practical importance of water resources for life in the city.
